Amber stained glass door panel restoration before and after

ON THE BENCH: A LOVELY AMBER DOOR PANEL

A lovely piece that came in from a local client

This piece came in with some definite tender love and care required. Removed from the door of a sold property, our client's brief was to restore it to its original glory and thus offer it pride of place in its new home. After many years of weathering Ontario's hot summers and extreme winters, this piece was in much need of our spa treatment.

A benched stained glass panel in need of some love.
We cleaned the panel initially, looking for defective areas within the general build, i.e., glass and lead, but all were in very good order. Once cleaned up and all excess putty, silicone and timber that the panel took with it, we rubbed down all lead work in order to remove original and time-gathered imperfections.

NOTE: some clients prefer to have the core 'patina' remain but most would like to see the piece returned to its original appearance.
Once smoothed out, we clear a millimetre or two of the old stained glass cement out from between the lead and the glass thus offering us room to re-cement.

Once brushed off and all of the original crumbling cement has been cleared out, we re-cement the entire panel using an age-old recipe that we'll share here at some point.
Once cemented and whiting powder added, we clear off as much of the cement as we can and leave it to set for 24 hours minimum. Once cured, we polish the lead and glass to within an inch of its life and present it to our client.
This was a lovely piece to work on and will look fantastic once the core ingredient of light has been added by our customer.
